The Champions League returned to our screens for the first time since December, and there were some interesting results in the first leg Round of 16 games that were played in midweek. These ties, including blockbuster clashes between PSG and Real and Inter against Liverpool, were due to the result of a redraw, with the original set of games having been declared void owing to a mistake in the draw.
PSG (Nike) 1-0 Real Madrid (Adidas)
Sporting Lisbon (Nike) 0-5 Manchester City (Puma)
Inter Milan (Nike) 0-2 Liverpool (Nike)
Salzburg (Nike) 1-1 Bayern Munich (Adidas)
Interestingly, all four Round of 16 clashes here featured at least one Nike team, with the Inter-LFC clash effectively becoming a Nike derby, with both teams wearing the famous swoosh.
Real Madrid were supposed to face Benfica in the original draw, but picked up Paris SG in the revised one. And it was Kylian Mbappe, widely linked with a move to the Bernabeu next summer, who scored a late winner for the French side against Los Blancos. Mbappe’s goal was set up by former Barca star Neymar, ensuring that PSG did not end up ruing Lionel Messi’s penalty miss on the hour mark.
And when you look at the xG map at the end, PSG did deserve their victory- Real mustered up just three shots in the full game.

Man City have been virtually unstoppable this season- they get tipped to win virtually all their domestic games at the likes of Squawka, and the situation is no different in the Champions League. Poor Sporting were streamrolled 5-0 at home by Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering side, and this is one tie that seems to be over before the second leg- that return clash at the Etihad now appears to be just a formality.
City were also wearing their third kit in this clash- they’ve worn it only twice previous in the league this season (v Brighton and against Southampton last month)

If there’s a team deemed capable of matching City, it’s Liverpool- Guardiola said as much recently. Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were handed a tricky knockout tie against Italian champions Inter Milan, but ended up winning 2-0 at the San Siro thanks to second half goals from Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah.
This was the first clash between the two sides in European competition since 2008- Liverpool won the first leg of that knockout tie by the same 2-0 margin (albeit at Anfield), and most folks will expect them to complete this job in the return leg back home.
Salzburg against Bayern was the surprise result- the Austrian side very nearly caused an upset here against the German champions. Despite Bayern dominating the attacking stats, Salzburg lead 1-0 until Kingsley Coman rescued a point for the visitors at the death.
Somewhat interestingly, Salzburg, despite playing at home, wore their white third kit. The Real-PSG and Inter-LFC clashes were both all-home kit affairs.
