Bitter rivals Liverpool and Manchester United both debuted their new season kits as they locked horns in pre-season in Bangkok. The Red Devils, wearing Adidas, prevailed 4-0 in the clash- also Erik Ten Hag’s first one in charge of the club. as they got their new home kit off to a winning start.
With United in their new home strip, it was obvious that Liverpool would be in their change kit given the potential colour clash between the two club’s home uniforms, but Nike only chose to unveil the shirt on the day of the game. The predominantly white jersey features a unique “dizzy” design- a nod to the music and dance scene in the 90’s in the words of the club.
However the Reds’ performance on the evening didn’t reach any dizzy heights whatsoever as they were beaten 4-0. To be fair, it was more of an experimental team put out by Jurgen Klopp while United were closer to first strength, but the nature of the win would have pleased long suffering United fans as well as new manager Erik Ten Hag. The Red Devils, if you remember, were thrashed 4-0 and 5-0 in the two league games by Liverpool last season in the league, and were clearly second best to their great rivals on the M62 in 21/22.
There were four different scorers for United here in the Thailand capital- Jadon Sancho got them going with his 12th minute strike before Fred’s audacious chip over national team mate Alisson doubled their lead. A mistake from Rhys Williams allowed Anthony Martial, who had a forgettable 21/22 campaign, to make it 3-0 before Facundo Pellistri finished things off late in the game.
Ten Hag has a monumental re-building job in front of him, as shown by the early odds for United next season from 10Bet. United, in a way, were lucky to get Europa League footy at the end of 21/22- they finished with a goal difference of zero, and only West Ham’s failure to beat Brighton on the final day of the season prevented them from falling into the third tier Conference League.
The Red Devils have made only one signing so far- left back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord, but continue to be linked with a host of names, most notably the troika of Antony, Lisandro Martinez and Frenkie de Jong, all players with an Ajax connection that Ten Hag has managed at some or the other point in his career.
Liverpool did have their chances- Fabio Carvalho, Luis Diaz and Mo Salah all hit the woodwork, while Darwin Nunez blasted one over from close range. It wasn’t exactly the kind of debut Reds fans would have wanted from their new Uruguayan signing, who will wear No.27 next season at Anfield, taking over the number from Belgian Divock Origi, who moved to Milan on a free transfer earlier this summer.
