West Bromwich Albion have unveiled a special white strip paying homage to their legendary forward Jeff Astle. The white kit (white shirt, shorts and red socks), a replica of their 1968 FA Cup final uniform, will be worn against Leicester City in their Premier League game next month.

Astle was at the peak of his powers in the late 1960’s, and scored the winning goal when Albion beat Everton at Wembley in the FA Cup in 1968. He scored 174 goals in 361 games for WBA between 1964 and 1973.

All great stuff, lovely idea, excellent nod to the past in a sport obsessed by the now. But my god those shirts look rubbish.

Exactly what Russell said. If it were probably not for the reason announced, I’d find it hard to fork out £50 for that.

Class idea in recognition of a WBA icon and great cause. Having been at the game in 1968 I remember the kit with great pleasure. Now if only we can get back to the traditional stripes for the home kit.
